A group formed after the 2000 Presidential Election will be monitoring polls today in San Diego County. The monitors are making sure every vote counts. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce explains.

The trained volunteers are part of the nonpartisan group Election Protection.

More than 75 volunteers plan to be at 100 polling places helping voters or anyone with voting questions or problems.

One of those volunteers is San Diego attorney Brian Fogarty.

He says provisional ballots are often given out and those votes aren't tallied unless there's a recount.

Fogarty says that means votes on propositions and other races may not be counted

Fogarty : There's also a number of propositions in the state of California and we'd like to ensure that a true test of what do the voters of the state of California say be reflected by the vote.

The volunteers are also available to help poll workers.

The group was created after the 2000 Presidential Election when they say approximately four to six million votes were lost due to voting irregularities and other problems.
