S.D. County Stops Issuing Marriage Licenses for Same-Sex Couples

San Diego County is no longer issuing licenses or recording weddings for same sex couples.  County Clerk Greg Smith says the change happened when it became clear Proposition eight would win.  That measure changes California's constitution, outlawing same sex weddings.   Smith estimates about three thousand same sex licenses were issued from June to election day.

Smith: We stopped issuing same sex marriage licenses and ceremonies, effective at 8 a.m. yesterday, in other words, the day after the election.  Based on the California constitution, unless otherwise stated, a proposition becomes effective the next day.

Smith says there were no protests outside the County Administration Building.  He credits regular communication with the region's gay and lesbian community.
