The makeup of the San Diego City Council changes next month. That's when four new members join the council. One environmental leader says the past council has left a "green" legacy, but there's room for improvement. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The San Diego City Council will have four new members next month - Todd Gloria, Marti Emerald, Sherri Lightener and Carl Demaio.

Bruce Reznik is executive director of San Diego Coastkeeper.

Reznik says the outgoing council members have set a high standard for environmental work.

Reznik:
I think the council that we've in place over the last eight years - a lot of the folks leaving - has been one of the greenest if not the greenest council's we've had.

He says the council's "green" legacy includes reducing urban runoff pollution, a beach smoking ban, and approving a pilot project for water recycling.

Reznik says he's optimistic the new council can do as well or better to safeguard and improve the environment.
