SPECIAL COVERAGE: Living With Wildfires: San Diego Firestorm 10 Years Later

LA Mayor Says Fire Could Cause Blackout

The mayor of Los Angeles is urging residents to conserve power and says a devastating fire in Sylmar could cause rolling blackouts.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa held a news conference Saturday after fierce winds pushed flames six miles through the San Fernando Valley community, destroying dozens of structures and seriously burning one person.

The 2,600-acre fire burned power lines, and the mayor urged people to avoid washing clothes or doing anything that would use electricity.
