Maureen Cavanaugh (Guest Host): During the 1950s, the Salton Sea was known as the California Riviera. Celebrities would vacation along its shores and the sea was famous for its excellent fishing.

But like some kind of Shakespearian figure, the Salton Sea fell from great heights to tragic depths. It is now considered an ecological disaster, a smelly, salty sea that kills thousands of fish and birds each year. 

A new documentary looks at this dramatic turn of events and the motley group of real eccentrics who still live there. It's called Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea and it's narrated by another true eccentric, filmmaker John Waters.
