Blood for the Holidays

Officials at the San Diego Blood Bank say they've got an ample supply of blood to last through the holidays. That's thanks to yesterday's Chargers blood drive. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

The Chargers drive collected more than 16-hundred pints of blood. The drive also brought in 12 plasma donations and added 80 names to the National Marrow Donor registry.

Mary Walter-Brown is with the San Diego Blood Bank. She says the blood collected at the drive will be put to good use.

Mary Walter-Brown: Right now that blood's being tested and processed, and then it's going to be well on its way, to a variety of hospitals right here in San Diego, people who are battling leukemia, accident victims, burn victims. So it's going to be helping a lot people over the course of the next few weeks.

Walter-Brown says 5,000 people came to the Chargers blood drive. Some waited up to three hours to donate blood.
