One of the new bills signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger at the end of the legislative session would provide allow agencies to provide assistance to homeless veterans.

The measure was approved by a committee chaired by San Diego Assemblymember Lori Saldana.

She says the new law allows veterans-only facilities and is modeled after the successful Veterans Village of San Diego.

Saldana: In some cases that would have been against state law to have a veterans-only type of assisted-living or living situation. So that bill will remove that impediment and allow agencies who want to develop assistance for veterans and housing to move forward without violating state law.

Saldana says the veteran-only housing with onsite social and medical services is the best option for giving homeless veterans what they need to successfully transition back into communities.
