The seals can linger a little longer at Children's Pool beach in La Jolla. A judge held a hearing Tuesday without issuing a ruling in the case pitting seals against beach-goers that has been in the courts for three years.

About 100 harbor seals have largely taken over the cove, and their fecal matter has made bacteria levels high in the surrounding water.

The central legal issue is how quickly the city must remove the seals, as a judge has previously ordered.

City Attorney Mike Aguirre says the city is seeking permits for moves to help permanently remove the seals and is asking for more time to implement the plan.

Superior Court Judge Yuri Hofmann has scheduled another hearing for Friday.
