The latest campaign disclosure figures show candidate Jan Goldsmith’s campaign war chest is more than three time bigger than San Diego city attorney, Mike Aguirre’s .
KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Usually an incumbent has the upper hand in fund raising, but in the case of San Diego’s city attorney, it’s the other way around. A cross section of interest groups, from business to city labor, are interested in replacing Mike Aguirre.
That helps explain why Aguirre’s campaign has raised only $16 thousand in the last couple of weeks, compared to $87 thousand for Goldsmith.
Goldsmith has raised almost $450 thousand since the beginning of the year, most of it since June when he topped of a slate of candidates running against Aguirre.
Aguirre, who’s invested hundreds of thousands of his own money into previous campaigns , has raised just $130 thousand this year from his more grass roots supporters
Both candidates have one TV ad running , but Goldmsith is in a stronger financial position to compete in the last weeks of the campaign. According to campaign disclosure statements , Aguirre has $7 thousand dollars left on hand. Goldsmith has $200 thousand.
