Advocates Debate Prop 8, the Gay Marriage Initiative

Tom Fudge: Proposition 8 has attracted more attention this year than any other item on the California ballot, aside from the Presidential race. Prop 8 would define marriage in California as a union between a man and a woman, essentially banning same-sex marriage. This same proposition language passed as a statute in California in the 2,000 election. Back then it was called Prop 22. But the law it created was thrown out as discriminatory, earlier this year, by the State Supreme court. Prop 8, if it passes next week, would overrule the Supreme Court by making the ban on same-sex marriage an amendment to the California Constitution. We'll hear from both sides today on Prop 8.
