Budget Issues Keep Governor in the State, Away from the Campaign Trail

There's a lengthy list of people being hurt by the record-long California budget stalemate. And if it continues much longer, there could be another name to add to that list -- Republican presidential nominee, John McCain. From Sacramento Jenny O'Mara reports.

Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed John McCain months ago for President… But the record long budget stalemate is now putting a crimp in his intentions to hit the campaign trail.

Schwarzenegger: I said I would not leave town, I would not leave the state until there's a budget. For instance I did not go to the Republican convention.

Dan Schnur is the Director of the Jesse Unruh Institute of Politics at U-S-C. He says Schwarzenegger could play a key role for McCain with a specific set of swing voters in other critical states like Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Schnur: Voters who tend to be economically blue collar and working class but a little bit more socially and culturally conservative. This is part of the electorate that he can reach very effectively-he has here in California and he's been able to do so in the past in other states …

Schnur says Schwarzenegger's help could be particularly effective in the last four to five weeks leading up to Election Day.

A Schwarzenegger spokeswoman says the Governor looks forward to campaigning for McCain in the next few months but there's nothing firm on the calendar yet. Since endorsing McCain, Schwarzenegger has already made some campaign appearances and attended at least three or four fundraisers for his presidential pick.
