Delays at San Ysidro Crossing Continue as Agents Learn New Computer System

Agents at the San Ysidro border crossing who aren't used to a new computer system are causing delays for people driving across, especially in Sentri lanes. Federal officials say things should return to normal next week. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

Federal officials say the new computer software was installed Monday.

A glitch caused drivers to have to wait for more than an hour to cross in the fast pass Sentri lanes.

Angelica Decima with Customs and Border Protection says they fixed that problem.

But agents are still getting used to the new program and traffic is still backed up.

Angelica Decima: Basically, its got more information on that computer screen for that officer. He's got more information on the vehicle and more information on the people. We expected that the first week there'd be that learning curve, and as officers become more accustomed, the waits would go back down to normal.

City officials in Tijuana say delays in Sentri lanes have caused chaos on Tijuana's roads. They say traffic backs up more than a mile on the main streets that lead to Sentri during peak crossing times.
