Children's Hospitals Ask for a 980-million dollar Shot in the Arm

California voters will be asked to approve a 980-million bond measure for Children's Hospitals in November. Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego will be eligible for 98-million dollars if Prop 3 passes. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

California voters approved a 750-million dollar bond measure for Children's Hospitals four years ago.

Hospitals say they need more money to pay for escalating construction costs and new equipment.

Barbara Ryan is a vice president with Rady Children's Hospital. She says their new project to add more operating rooms and beds will cost 260-million dollars.

Barbara Ryan: This hospital needs to have the capacity to be able to provide the necessary care for all the children who need it. And this money is necessary to be able to do that.

Critics say California can ill afford another massive hospital bond when the state's already deeply in debt.
