Airport Seeks Approval for 2nd Phase of Expansion

Work has already begun on expanding San Diego’s Lindbergh Field. The airport still needs approval from the California Coastal Commission for a major part of the expansion. That could happen at the commission’s meeting on Friday.

The airport is already building an area for planes to park overnight. Airport planning director Keith Wilschetz says Coastal Commission approval is still needed for the second phase of the expansion. That includes building 10 new gates and a double-decked road to separate arriving and departing passengers. Wilschetz says it should go through.

“It appears that staff at the Coastal Commission is pleased with the application. We are unaware of any issues at all. Staff has said they may go ahead and put it on consent agenda because there doesn’t seem to be any problems at all,” he says.

Wilschetz says airport representatives will be at the meeting if any issues come up. He says the airport is also planning to expand its parking lot at Pacific Highway and Sassafras Street.
