Environmental Cleanup Beginning In Downtown San Diego

Aired 12/30/09

The Centre City Development Corporation plans to remove contaminated soil from underneath a parking lot in the East Village of San Diego.

The Centre City Development Corporation plans to remove contaminated soil from underneath a parking lot in the East Village of San Diego. The work is scheduled to begin Monday, January 4, 2009, at Seventh Avenue and Market Street.

The environmental cleanup project is funded by a $1.5 million grant awarded to the downtown redevelopment agency by the State Water Resources Control Board.

An Escondido company will do most of the cleanup work.

In addition to removing contaminated soils, crews will reconstruct and resurface the 187-spot surface parking lot, which is owned by CCDC.

The CCDC says that, during the excavation work, some parking lane closures will affect Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

The work is expected to take about about five months.
