Jury Acquits Off-Duty Officer in Traffic Shooting

A jury has acquitted an off-duty San Diego police officer of weapons charges in the shooting of an 8-year old boy and his mother during a traffic dispute.

Jurors reached their verdict Monday in Superior Court in Vista.

Prosecutors say Frank White fired his gun at Rachel Silva's Honda Accord after a near-collision erupted into a fight between the drivers.

White testified during the trial that he identified himself as a police officer and pointed the gun at Silva after she had tailgated him and charged at his car several times.

Two bullets struck Silva in the upper arm and one hit her son in the knee.

White was charged with felony negligently discharging a firearm and misdemeanor exhibiting a firearm.
