Students at High Tech High International are getting a lesson in what San Diego families eat. Urban Ecology Instructor Colleen Gavan wanted to expose her students to local and global food systems after reading Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio’s "What the World Eats." The seniors were asked to document and investigate the eating habits of San Diegans. Students took photographs of local families with a week’s worth of their food.

Gavan says her students were surprised to learn how their food choices affect the environment and society. After gathering and analyzing the information, the class plans to compile the photos and essays into a book.
