SWAT Standoff In Encinitas

A woman wanted for alleged drug and weapons crimes prompted a SWAT standoff this afternoon by holing up in a North County home when authorities showed up to take her into custody.

Deputy federal marshals arrived at the residence in the 1000 block of Hermes Avenue in the Leucadia district of Encinitas to serve the suspect with an arrest warrant about 1 p.m., sheriff's Lt. Mike Munsey said.

The woman responded by locking herself in the house and refusing repeated orders to exit and surrender, Munsey said.

Shortly before 4 p.m., a sheriff's special weapons and tactics squad was sent to the neighborhood to surround the residence.

It was unclear if the suspect was armed, but with "a weapons warrant (involved), we're not taking any chances," the lieutenant said.

Crisis negotiators also were dispatched to try to persuade the woman to give up without further resistance.

Her name was not immediately available.
