No Surprises with Avatar and Hurt Locker Leading the Pack

This years marks the start of the Academy's new expansion of the Best Picture nominees from five to ten and the nominees reflect a mix of mainstream pop entertainment and rt house fair. The 82nd Oscars will be broadcast on Sunday March 7 on ABC with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin as hosts. See the complete list of nominees.

The nice thing about the expanded nominees is that films such as "District 9" and "An Education" were able to snag nods, something that would have been unlikely in the old five nominees division. Now they can add that to their ads and hopefully get a little more mileage at the box office with a re-release or on their DVD release. Of course the extra space also means films like "The Blind Side" and "Precious," the emo tearjerkers are also in competition.

Some of the satisfying nominations include Christoph Waltz for "Inglorious Basterds" (if he doesn't win there may be a riot); the British political comedy "In the Loop" getting a nomination for its crackling script; "Burma VJ" and "The Cove" both on the list for best documentary; and the low budget "District 9" competing with "Avatar" and "Star Trek" for visual effects when "District 9's" effects budget was probably equal to the other two's catering bill.

Mercifully, "Nine" did not make the best film category and only sneaked in for couple nominations like song and supporting actress (Penelope Cruz). It was disappointing to see Hayao Miyazaki's delightful anime "Ponyo" passed over for best animated film but that's because Disney wanted to promote its own homegrown films, "Up" and "The Princess and the Frog." The Best song nominees predictable came from Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" as well as from "Nine" and "Crazy Heart" (the only worthy nominee) so the musical numbers at the Oscar show will be the usual boring fare.

Here's a list of all the nominees. For more information you can also go to the official Oscar site.
