School Board Keeps Parcel Tax Proposal

— The San Diego school board still plans to put a parcel tax on the November ballot, despite a move by the board president to remove it.

President Richard Barrera feared there wouldn't be support in the community to pass the tax, which requires a two-thirds majority, and he called a special meeting to possibly rescind it.

The parcel tax looked as though it may end up on the same ballot as a half-cent sales tax increase for the city of San Diego, but Barrera changed his mind. He said passing the parcel tax was worth the effort.

"I need to be honest with people supporting the parcel tax that it's going to be very difficult to get there," said Barrera. "But what you're hearing from parents, what you're hearing from people who care about our schools is we're willing to take on this fight, and so I'm willing to take it on with them."

The parcel tax would raise more than $50 million a year, for five years, in a district that faces state funding reductions and big budget cuts.

This is not about “the kids”! The district receives plenty of money and the citizens pay plenty of tax to educate the children in schools… estimated at over $16,000 per student/year . EACH. How is that not enough? On this planet, when you spend more than you take in… you have a problem SEE:UNION GREED. This is obvious, easy. Waste, mismanagement and greed. Look at the GRAND JURY REPORT … the deeper they dug, the worse it got. ( New grand jury report on San Diego Unified is scathingCHRIS REED WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2, 2010 P.M.30 12:19 P.M.
Vast financial irregularities, use of student body funds for banned purposes -- and "solicitation of minor prostitutes." There's loads here to chew on. )
The short year, tenure, the teachers union, … the list goes on goes on and on. Using the kids as pawns and treating the citizens as suckers, the District and Union should get to work, have a reality check and do the jobs they are paid very well to do.
Stop the grotesque waste and abuse before you extort MORE TAXES under the ruse “ it’s about the kids”.
