S.D. School Superintendent Frontrunners To Be Named Next Week

Aired 6/9/10

— The San Diego Unified school board will announce the top three candidates for superintendent next week. This is the first time the district is revealing the names of frontrunners for the top job.

The board will conduct a few more interviews this week before picking the top three contenders.

The finalists will take part in a public forum at district headquarters. They'll be expected to answer questions and give their best pitch as to why they want the top job.

District officials want people to submit questions online for the candidates. The district's Bernie Rhinerson says it is a public job interview.

“We'll take all those questions and synthesis them,” Rhinerson said. “We (district officials) will develop and interview for each one of the candidates. Each candidate will have 45 minutes.”

District officials plan to webcast and televise the forum.

This is the first time the district is taking this approach to picking the district's next leader. Trustees hope the process will result in a superintendent that is committed to the district. San Diego Unified has lost through three superintendents in the past four years.
