A motorist wanted on several felony arrest warrants led deputies on a brief road chase through the far northern reaches of San Diego County today before pulling over and fleeing on foot, leaving behind a woman and child in his car.
The deputy tried to stop the man for speeding shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Interstate 15 near Rainbow Valley Road, roughly two miles south of the Riverside County line, sheriff's Lt. Jim Duffy said.
The man refused to yield and sped off to the south, exiting the freeway a short time later and continuing through the rural Rainbow area, according to Duffy.
The suspect soon pulled over behind some foliage near the intersection of Pala Temecula and Lilac Extension roads in the rural Pala area. Moments later, the sedan re-entered the roadway, being driven by a woman who had been a passenger when the pursuit started, Duffy said.
She soon yielded and was taken into custody along with a child who was also in the car. The man, however, was gone.
Deputies fanned out through the area in search of the suspect, aided by service dogs and a sheriff's helicopter crew. It was unclear what type of warrants were outstanding against the man, whose name was not immediately available, the lieutenant said.
