Hearings Begin On Proposed Power Line From Mexico To San Diego

Wind Energy To Go From Baja To San Diego County

The first of three public hearings starts Tuesday evening in Jacumba to discuss a proposed power line from Mexico to southeast San Diego County. The line would bring wind energy across the border.

Sempra Energy said the 500 kilovolt power line is needed to transfer energy from a proposed wind farm in Northern Baja.

Northern Mexico and southeast San Diego County are prime areas for wind energy, but some residents in rural southeast San Diego County are against the transmission line.

Boulevard resident Donna Tisdale is with the Protect Our Communities Foundation.

She said the project will change the rural character of the area.

"We moved here because it's beautiful and quiet and peaceful and we don't want to be transformed into an industrial energy park," said Tisdale.

Sempra Energy said the Mexican wind-power project will help the company get more electricity from renewable sources.

Comments on the cross-border power line can be submitted to the U.S. Department of Energy until Nov. 1.

The U.S. Department of Energy hearings start at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Jacumba Highland Center; 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Boulevard Volunteer Fire Department; and 5 p.m. Thursday at the San Diego County Department of Planning and Land Use in San Diego.

At KPBS, Ed continues his contributions to National Public Radio and other national and regional news organizations. He has won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and San Diego Press Club for his environmental reporting at KPBS-FM-TV and for producing and anchoring radio newscasts. In 2007 he was selected a National Press Foundation fellow for Understanding Violent Weather II program. The seminars were held at the National Weather Center in Norman, Okla. In 2008 he spoke at a UC San Diego conference on U.S. National Security as part of the school’s Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. Ed led a discussion with the 18 foreign government officials and academics about the political debate over climate change. In 2010, Ed was elected to a three-year term on the board of the San Diego Press Club.
