San Diego Assemblywoman Decries Demise Of Gun Bill

Now that her bill to stop the open display of unloaded guns is dead, San Diego Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña says Californians aren't being protected. Meanwhile, gun rights advocates are rejoicing over the bill's demise.

Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña says she had warned colleagues that Republican opponents of the gun bill would drag debate out past midnight to avoid a vote. So when debate on the bill started yesterday only 70 minutes before the midnight deadline to get legislation passed, she expected Democratic leaders to stop the tactic. They did not and now she says law enforcement's top priority bill for the year is dead.

"Many, many officers have told me it's just a matter of time before someone is shot and injured when these open carriers are allowed to carry their guns in public without any regulation whatsoever," Saldaña said.

John Pearce, co-founder of OpenCarry.org, says his group is happy that the "attack on the self defense rights of Californians" has been defeated.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
