The City Council today approved a nearly $1 million contract with Florida-based Cale Parking Systems USA to purchase 131 multi-space parking pay stations around San Diego.
Fifty-one of the devices, which each can service about six parking spaces instead of only one, were installed as part of a pilot project in 2006, which city officials said resulted in a 24 percent increase in parking meter revenue.
"It is a system that has proven to work," Councilman Kevin Faulconer said.
The $982,034 contract approved 7-0 today by the City Council pays for the original 51 multi-space parking pays stations and for the purchase of 80 additional meters.
Councilwoman Marti Emerald was absent from today's meeting.
The 131 multi-space meters will be paid for largely through community parking district funds.
