SDSU's Veterans Center Is Renamed

The Veterans Center at San Diego State University was renamed today for Joan and Art Barron, who donated $1 million to create an endowment and fund its operations.

The Barrons traveled from their home in New Jersey for the dedication ceremony.

Art Barron, a retired entertainment executive, Navy veteran and SDSU alumnus, said the couple got involved after school President Stephen Weber discussed the facility with them.

"We have a special place in our hearts for SDSU and all veterans,'' Barron said. "We are honored by all the young men and women who have given such service to our country and we owe them a big debt.''

The 3-year-old center provides services for 1,200 student veterans, reservists and active-duty military members, along with several hundred dependents. It was the first such center opened within the California State University system.

SDSU is considered one of the Top 20 "military friendly'' campuses in the country, according to the university.

"In a town with so many veterans, it is crucial that SDSU provide a culture of appreciation and support for student veterans,'' Weber said. "Because of Art and Joan's leadership and commitment to those who've served, we have been able to provide the help our student veterans need to succeed at SDSU.''

The center is located in the Student Services West building, just north of Aztec Center.
