A 14-year-old girl who did not return home after taking out the trash was found safe today at a library, accompanied by a 24- year-old man, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

Makaylia Williams was spotted by a citizen who recognized her description, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Mata said.

The girl and the man were questioned by officers, and it appeared that she left home on her own, the lieutenant said.

Mata said the teen took off about 6:20 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of Marquette Street, near Santa Barbara Street. The girl's mother reported her missing about an hour later.

Police found a bag of trash, identified by the girl's mother as the one her daughter had taken out of the apartment, with its contents on the ground, Mata said.

The woman said the family is new to the area and her daughter has few friends, he said.

Police launched a search for the girl involving 20 officers, a helicopter and bloodhounds, Mata said.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
