A water main ruptured underneath an Allied Gardens intersection this afternoon, leaving dozens of homes temporarily without functional plumbing and shutting down traffic lanes in the neighborhood.
The broken 12-inch-diameter concrete pipeline began flooding the roadway at Chaparajos Court and Conestoga Way about 2:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Water Department.
Crews had the overflow, which reportedly flooded some residential property, under control within an hour, SDWD spokesman Arian Collins.
The mishap left 52 homes without water service, Collins said. All the affected residences were expected to be back on line and the roadways reopened by about 2 a.m. Wednesday.
