Teen Found Dead From Hypothermia In San Diego County

A male who appeared to be in his late teens was found dead from hypothermia in the Pine Valley area over the weekend, authorities said.

The body was discovered by Customs and Border Protection personnel shortly before 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Late Saturday into early Sunday, a cold winter storm passed through San Diego County, dropping measurable amounts of snow in some areas.

Sunday's death marks the fourth apparent weather-related death in the county this month.

On President's Day, the bodies of two apparent illegal immigrants were found bundled up in the woods about a mile east of Highway 79.

Last Thursday, an 18-year-old man was found crushed to death under an 800-pound hunk of concrete at an industrial site in Lakeside. The young man apparently was trying to keep warm after leaving home because of personal problems, and it became unstable and fell on him, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
