An investigation continued today into an officer-involved shooting in Escondido in which an agitated, apparently suicidal man found wielding a pair of scissors at a North County home was shot dead, police said.
A woman called 911 shortly after 8:30 a.m. Thursday to report that the man was behaving erratically and cutting his own neck with scissors at the house in the 2500 block of Hamlin Court in Escondido, said Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter.
The man was later identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office as Van Dinh Le, a 51-year-old who lived at the home with his wife.
Three officers went to the residence and began speaking with Le in an attempt to get him to put down the scissors and he eventually charged at an officer with the scissors, Carter said, adding that the officer fired one shot in self-defense, striking Le.
Le was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
He was the only one at the home when police arrived. The woman who reported the emergency had left the residence before calling 911, according to Carter. The Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman caller as a neighbor.
The officer who shot Le was placed on administrative leave as a matter of routine, Carter said. His name was not immediately released.
