Work will begin tomorrow to convert G Street to a one-way road along its entire length in downtown San Diego, according to the Centre City Development Corp.
Currently, the roadway goes both directions through the Marina section of downtown, turning into an entirely eastbound thoroughfare through the Gaslamp and East Village to the on-ramp of state Route 94.
Construction crews will make the conversion in two-block intervals over the next week, beginning at Union Street and moving west to Pacific Highway.
The change will allow for the installation of angled curbside parking on G Street, providing 10 additional spaces, the CCDC reported.
The CCDC said the change is part of its San Diego Quiet Zone project, which seeks to improve safety at intersections of roadways and rail lines, thereby reducing the need for trains to blare horns in the middle of the night, disturbing the sleep of downtown residents.
The rail line crosses G Street at an awkward angle, limiting the safety measures that could be used since pedestrians can cross the tracks from multiple angles, according to the CCDC.
While the work over the next week could cause delays for drivers, the CCDC does not expect negative traffic impacts once the conversion is completed a week from Friday.
