The secret to vitality and insight to age-related diseases may be found in the intestines - of a fruit fly.

Researchers at the Salk Instutite for Biological Studies and at University of California, Los Angeles found fruit flies lived up to 50 percent longer, after a gene in their intestine was altered.

The study is published online in Cell Metabolism.
