Volunteer San Diego Closing Doors Due To Lack Of Funding

A nonprofit that for decades matched up charity-minded San Diegans with needy civic organizations announced today that it has closed its doors.

The board of directors of Volunteer San Diego made the announcement in a posting on its website.

"Despite an all-out effort by staff, volunteers and the board of directors, VSD has not been able to secure sufficient funding to sustain its operations in this economy," the posting said.

The message closed by thanking supporters and encouraging San Diegans to continue to "seek volunteer opportunities at the many nonprofits, schools, libraries, faith-based and other community organizations throughout the county."

The organization opened in 1969 as the Volunteer Center of San Diego County and operated as a division of the United Way for 30 years. It became independent in 2000 and merged with San Diego Cares two years later, according to the website.

"Volunteer San Diego played a major role connecting our needs with volunteer resources in the community and we're all saddened to see the organization close," said Dylan Edwards, volunteer coordinator of San Diego Coastkeeper.

His group joined with two other environmental organizations, the San Diego River Park Foundation and Project Wildlife, in a joint statement to remind residents that they still have plenty of need for volunteers and can visit their websites for information.
