Alleged Mismanagement Focus Of Sweetwater Summit

Sweetwater Union High School District is hoping to rebuild community trust after accusations of mismanagement and scandal at a community education summer in Chula Vista this evening.

Sweetwater’s last superintendent allegedly misused a district credit card for expensive meals, and invited vendors to a party for his daughter where cash gifts were accepted. There were also accusations of grade-changing, excessive legal and public relations fees, signature forgery on a letter sent out to parents and ethics violations by the school's nutrition services management.

Coming up with a plan to turn the district around was one of Interim Superintendent Ed Brand’s goals for his first three months on the job. Tonight, community members will hear what came out of that work.

“This is an opportunity for the community to come together," Brand said. "We give a state of the district, tell them what we found out, tell them what our analysis was. They’re actually going to get an opportunity to vote and see if we’re headed in the right direction or not.”

People at tonight’s meeting will vote on about a dozen steps to restore the district’s reputation. The summit will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Eastlake High School gymnasium at 1120 EastLake Parkway in Chula Vista.
