A new study shows that tribal gaming casinos have a $7.5 billion impact on California’s economy.

Aired 8/8/12 on KPBS News.

A new study shows that tribal gaming casinos have a $7.5 billion impact on California’s economy.

The report comes as Governor Jerry Brown considers whether to approve two new tribal casinos that would add to the 60 already in the state.

Beacon Economics conducted the study. It shows tribal gaming has helped create 52,000 jobs in industries throughout the state.

Steve Stallings is with the California Nations Indian Gaming Association which commissioned the study. He says the report also shows their casinos generate significant tax revenue. “$500 million in revenue that goes to state and local government, that actually is tax revenue. So this idea that tribes don’t contribute to the tax base of the state is wrong, tribes are actually contributing significantly to the betterment of California,” said Stallings.

An estimated 80 percent of workers in tribal casinos are not tribal members.

Stallings says tribal gaming operations have provided about $800 million to non-gaming tribes in the last dozen years.
