The City Council approved annual charges to property owners in 56 assessment districts throughout San Diego today, in its last meeting for a month.
The districts pay for improvements to lighting, landscaping, maintenance of open space and other services. The city is required to levy assessments annually, and today was the deadline.
The districts provide "phenomenal and important work'' that might not otherwise get done, Councilman Todd Gloria said.
The assessments were approved on a pair of 6-0 votes. Councilmen David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer were absent from the 20-minute meeting.
The council members will take a one-month break, necessitated by renovation of the 12th floor of the City Administration Building, where asbestos removal and installation of fire sprinklers is under way. The Council Chamber and Council Committee Room are both located a dozen stories high at City Hall.
The council members have already been bumped out of their 10th floor offices because of a construction project to add space for the new 9th District. The district, resulting from San Diego's change to a new form of government several years ago, was formed during last year's redistricting process.
The 9th District representative will be Marti Emerald, who shifted from her 7th District and won office outright in the June primary. She will be sworn in for her new area in December.
The council offices are temporarily located on the fourth floor.
The next regularly scheduled meeting is Sept. 10.
