SAN DIEGO It will cost almost twice as much as estimated to fix the damaged lily pond in Balboa Park.
A news release issued today from Mayor Jerry Sanders’ office puts the cost at $19,000. Earlier estimates had pegged the damage at $10,000.
The lily pond was damaged during a water gun fight that got out of control about a week ago. A drainage pipe was broken and landscaping was trampled. No fish or turtles were killed.
The news release said $13,000 in donations have been raised through the Friends of Balboa Park organization. The non-profit said it’s confident it will be able to raise the rest.

I would love to see an itemized invoice for the repairs. $19k seems a bit inflated - did they refill the pool with bottled water? And I'm willing to bet that nothing was put out to bid.

Have those involved in the damage been billed?

instead of just brainlessly repeating press releases I would like (no, dare) KPBS actually do some investigative reporting and find out what the costs are, how contracts are given out, to whom and who is making money on this one.
