The Department of Defense has identified the two soldiers killed by an Afghan soldier on August 27 as Sgt. Christopher J. Birdwell, 25, of Windsor, Colorado and Spc. Mabry J. Anders, 21, of Baker City, Oregon.

Both men were assigned to the 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado.

As Home Post reported on Monday, an Afghan army corps spokesman claimed the two American soldiers were killed when an Afghan soldier accidentally discharged his weapon. The Afghan soldier then ran away, and was killed when NATO aircraft fired on him from above.

A total of 12 U.S. service members have been killed by Afghan allies in the last three weeks.

The Associated Press reports both Birdwell and Anders were posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
