Iran has begun naval exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, where one-fifth of the world's oil exports pass, according to the Associated Press.

Iranian naval commander Habibollah Sayyari said on Iran's state-run television, according to Reuters, that the the six-day long naval drills are meant to:

[S]how "the armed forces' military capabilities" in defending Iran's borders as well as sending a message of peace and friendship to neighboring countries.

Iran's navy will use fighter jets, hovercrafts, warships, and submarines in the exercises, which will encompass roughly one million square kilometers in the Strait of Hormuz - as well as the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.
