San Diego County Fair Sets New Attendance Record

A new all-time attendance record was set during the 24 day San Diego County Fair. More than 1.5 million people moved through the turnstile this year. The theme was "Out of this World," a celebration of space exploration.

Linda Zwieg has worked at the fair for years, following in her fathers footsteps. She's now the spokesperson for the annual event. "We are the 6th largest fair in the U.S. and therefore we are a leader in the industry and I think that's one of the things that attracts folks to us," Zweig said.

The mix of entertainment is always great to see with more than 20,000 performers taking to the stage this year. You can't help but feel the excitement in the air and smell the variety of food.

Barbara and Bay Ponder came from North County with a few suggestions. "The giant smoked turkey legs are really good, the Australian battered fried potatoes are really good and so are the apple fries. And the Mexican funnel cakes are really good they're covered with whip cream." One of the most popular snacks was the deep fried Oreos, more than 60,000 sold and more than 160,000 Belly Buster Burgers were gobbled up during the fair.

"Obviously the crowds love it, because we are breaking records every day and as of July 3rd we broke attendance records. We had over 1,420,000 people and hopefully we'll hit over 1.5 million," Zweig said.
