Brown: No Pension Measure On November Ballot

Governor Jerry Brown says Californians won’t see a statewide ballot measure this fall that would overhaul the state’s underfunded pension system.

Aired 7/10/12 on KPBS News.

Governor Jerry Brown says Californians won’t see a statewide ballot measure this fall that would overhaul the state’s underfunded pension system.

“But we'll get it done. Just like I did to taxes, I'll get to pension reform. One way or the other, we will reform the pensions in California. You can count on that," said Brown.

Last week, Brown told legislative Democrats their pension proposal wasn’t acceptable and asked them to keep working during this month’s summer recess. Asked what’s wrong with the Democrats’ plan, Brown said it would save billions of dollars less than his own 12-point proposal from last fall. “We've costed it out. It was a very complicated plan. And we've pretty well dug into it and find out it just doesn't do the job.”

Democrats have said their goal is to reach savings comparable to the governor’s. They say they’re in agreement with Brown on many of his proposals but call some of his ideas unworkable or too harsh on public employees.
