A man who perched on a San Diego freeway sign for more than eight hours, jamming traffic for miles, has surrendered to authorities.

U-T San Diego says he climbed down a fire truck ladder on Interstate 805 in the Clairemont area shortly before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

His name hasn't been released.

The California Highway Patrol says the man climbed onto a freeway exit sign at around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities shut the southbound lanes and brought in crisis negotiators.

The man had a large piece of paper and authorities say he kept scrawling messages on it, including one claiming that the FBI was trying to kill him and another declaring that he wasn't a pedophile.

Southbound freeway lanes were reopened at about 1:45 a.m.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
