Marine Gunnery Sgt. Daniel J. Price, 27, of Holland, Michigan died July 29 in Afghanistan. Price was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion at Camp Pendleton.

The Department of Defense reports Price and Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan W. Gifford, 34, were killed in combat operations. Gifford was assigned to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The U-T San Diego ran a story in November 2011 about a dozen special operator Marines who were awarded Silver and Bronze Stars for their actions during missions in 2009 and 2010. Then Staff Sgt. Daniel Price was among those who received the Bronze Star.

According to the U-T:

The Marine Special Operations Command, which was activated in 2006 to build on the Corps’ conventional force reconnaissance units, has been in such demand that it is difficult to gather its operators for awards ceremonies, a command spokesman said.
