Soldier From Southern California Killed In Afghanistan

Pfc. Jose Oscar Belmontes

Pfc. Jose Oscar Belmontes, 28, of La Verne, California was killed on July 28 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire, according to the Department of Defense.

Sgt. 1st Class Bobby L. Estle, 38, of Lebanon, Ohio was also killed in the attack.

Both soldiers were assigned to the 630th Engineer Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade at Fort Drum in New York.

Syracuse.com reports Belmontes and Estle deployed to Afghanistan in October.

Belmontes worked as a construction engineer for the Army. He is survived by his wife and parents.
