The small, rural community of Covington, Indiana held a candlelight vigil last night in memory of hometown boy and Camp Pendleton Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua Witsman. Witsman, 23, was killed in Afghanistan last Wednesday, according to Indiana television station WLFI-TV.
The Department of Defense has not yet officially announced Witsman's death.
Fountain County Clerk Patricia Gritten told the Associated Press that Lance Cpl. Witsman was on his second deployment to Afghanistan. He had been overseas three months.
According to Witsman's Facebook page, he joined the Marine Corps in 2009, after graduating from Covington Community High School in 2007. In describing himself on Facebook, Witsman said:
"I'm just trying to make my way just the same as everyone else."
Witsman is survived by a wife and two stepchildren.
