Dermatology Convention Brings 20,000 Visitors To San Diego

One of the biggest trade shows to be held in San Diego this year kicks off today at the San Diego Convention Center.

The 70th annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, which happens to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Botox, will bring between 17,000 and 20,000 attendees to town, making it the fifth largest gathering of the 2012 convention calendar, according to Convention Center officials.

Denise Mosgrove of the Convention Center Corp. said delegates will account for nearly 30,000 room-nights at local hotels, producing a projected $919,000 in tax revenue for the city.

The overall economic impact of the five-day convention is projected to be $64.6 million, Mosgrove said. It will be surpassed only by Comic-Con International, Digestive Disease Week, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Environmental Systems Research Institute, she said.

Not only is the dermatologists' convention one of the biggest shows of the year for San Diego, but attendance could set a record for the AAD, said the organization's Kira Jilek.
