San Diego Nursing Program Will Expand After $7 Million Gift
An elite-nursing program at the University of San Diego plans to double in size, thanks to a gift of $7 million from a local family.

The Hahn School of Nursing at the University of San Diego (USD) is one of the highest ranked graduate nursing programs in the country.

The rigorous and competitive nursing program offers advanced practice and doctorate degrees for nurses in anesthesiology, research, clinical practitioner and more.

450 students are currently enrolled in the program that provides up to 43% of faculty for other nursing schools in San Diego.

SAIC donated the seven million dollar gift.

The money will help fund a new high-tech lab and 3-story research building for nursing students on campus, called the Beyster Institute For Nursing Research.

Sally Brosz Hardin, Ph.D., dean of USD’s Hahn School of Nursing said the school is an incubator of nurse scientists, who will guide and shape health care practice in the future.

"I am so grateful to Mrs. Beyster and the whole Beyster family. They understand the importance of nursing research and advanced practice for the future of healthcare for San Diego, for all of California and for the country,” said Hardin.

She also said the new institute will be the first of it’s kind in the nation.

“There are many institutes of medical research, but as far as we know, this is the first institute for nursing research in the country,” explained Hardin.

Construction on the Beyster Institute for Nursing Research is set to begin next year. The university plans to raise another $8 million for the project.
