— A gun salute and wreath laying ceremony were among the many moments met with applause at a ceremony to honor fallen troops at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma on Monday.

Lieutenant General Thomas Wauldhauser of the United States Marine Corps was the key note speaker.

"As a marine and citizen of this great nation, it is especially humbling to stand here in uniform today and speak to you about the many American service men and women we honor on this special day," said Lt. General Wauldhauser.

Children waved flags as their parents showed their respect.

"It's important to pay our respect to the men and women who have served and the ultimate sacrifice that some of them have made for us so that we can live the way we live," said observer Rosemarie Morgans. "I brought my sons here because I want them to know how important it is to pay our respects."

This respect could be seen as well as heard, as Niki Rodgers of the United States Navy sang "God Bless America."
