A Navy F/A-18 jet made an emergency landing Tuesday night at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, according to the U-T San Diego.

The F/A-18E Super Hornet, based at Naval Air Station Lemoore in Central California, was doing training exercises with the USS Nimitz off the coast of San Diego when it encountered trouble. Fog prevented the aircraft from landing at NAS North Island.

Naval Air Forces Pacific spokesman Lt. Aaron Kakiel told the U-T he was unable to say why the plane made the emergency landing at Miramar and not on the Nimitz:

“In such cases, a careful evaluation of the situation is conducted and aircraft are diverted to the most appropriate landing field. These decisions are made with the safety of the pilot, aircraft and communities surrounding the airfield in mind.”

The jet landed safely, without injury to the pilot or damage to the plane.
