Three In Custody After Shots Fired In City Heights

Search prompts school lockdowns in South Park

Three people are in custody Wednesday in connection with a report of shots fired in a City Heights neighborhood.

The search for the suspects also prompted a temporary lockdown at several South Park-area schools.

Police received a report of shots fired from a vehicle shortly after 2 p.m. near Myrtle Avenue. Police said no one was hurt in the shooting.

Officers spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver fled and entered westbound state Route 94 and then exited on 28th Street.

Two people exited the vehicle prior to it crashing into a canyon near 33rd and Grape streets. Both were taken into custody.

However, the driver was able to escape from the scene, prompting a manhunt in the South Park. 10News is trying to confirm a report that a second person also fled the vehicle.

Albert Einstein Academy, Golden Hill School, McKinley Elementary School, Brooklyn Child Development Center, Garfield High School, and Monroe Clark Middle School were locked down as a precaution.

At about 3:15 p.m., police were able to capture one outstanding suspect. As of about 3:20 p.m., all lockdowns were lifted.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
